Childcare in Boronia: what to ask on a tour
On a Boronia childcare tour, ask six things: who leads the kinder program, how rooms are staffed, what outdoor play looks like, who prepares the food, what you will pay after subsidies, and whether your days are available.
Centres can look alike from the foyer. The differences usually sit behind a few specific questions. Here is what to ask, and why each answer helps.
Ask who leads the kinder program
In Victoria, a funded kinder program is led by a qualified early childhood teacher, and funded kinder can run inside a long day care centre. Ask whether the centre’s kinder program is government funded, how many hours a week it runs, and whether the teacher is in your child’s room on each program day.
Ask how the rooms are staffed
Ask how many educators work in your child’s room, who covers when someone is on leave, and how long the room team has worked together. Consistent faces matter to young children and to parents, and a centre should be comfortable answering.
Ask what happens outdoors
Ask how much of the day is spent outside, what the outdoor space includes, and what happens when it rains or is very hot. If a centre mentions bush kinder or nature play, ask how often it runs and where it takes place.
Ask about the food
“We provide meals” can mean many things. Ask who prepares the food, where it is prepared, who plans the menu, and how the centre manages allergies and dietary needs.
Ask what you will pay after subsidies
A daily fee on its own tells you little. The Child Care Subsidy is applied first, and the percentage depends on your family’s income. Since January 2026, all families eligible for the subsidy can get at least 72 hours of subsidised care a fortnight under the 3 Day Guarantee. For a kinder age child in a funded program at a participating centre, the Free Kinder offset then reduces your fees further. Our guide to Free Kinder in long day care explains how this works. Check your own subsidy with Services Australia, and ask the centre for a written estimate.
Ask about your specific days
Getting a place and getting the days you need are two different questions. Popular day combinations can fill ahead, so ask about the specific days and start date you want, as early as you can.
